Think of Switzerland and your mind automatically goes to the Alp’s, hiking trails, trendy cities and the romance. Unfortunately for those of us balling on a budget, this place seems to be a dream. Don’t miss out a trip especially when it can easily fit your pocket.
Checkout our breakdown on beautiful yet affordable places on the way to Switzerland, and some hidden gems that we came across during our road trip.
#1 Obernai – Alsace wine route
Alsace wine route is a beautiful 170km route that starts near Strasbourg and ends near Colmar. A good blend of German and French culture with cobbled streets, half timbered houses, french bakeries and tones of wine tasting. We visited Obernai a gem of Alsatian beauty.
Stay – We stayed at a very charming B&B, located 1107 meters above sea level. Access to this chalet is only by foot so park your car at Parking Gaschney and take a 20 min hike to the chalet. https://www.leschallern.com/
Enjoy scenic mountains, taste fondue (if you like cheese) and hop into a cogwheel train to see beautiful view of the region. Here is a list of interesting things to do –
Lauterbrunnen- Take cogwheel train to the Kleine Scheidegg and enjoy amazing view. This place is ideal for hiking.
Harder Kulm – Take a funicular railway to get to the top.
Stay – We stayed in a hostel called Backpackers Villa which was very close to the city centre.
#3 Schwenden im Diemtigtal
A quiet location for nature lovers. Passing through chalets and fields and river is just breathtaking. Best spot for valley hikes.
#4 Grindelwald First
We could call this as one of our favourite spots in Switzerland. The breathtaking view, hiking, suspension bridge of the First cliff walk and adrenal rush riding down the mountain cart is something not to miss. The cable car to the top will cost you around Euro 35.
Stay – We stayed at Jungfrau Lodge which is 5 mins walk from the train station and FirstBahn cable car. The panoramic view from the hotel is something you would want to wake up to.
